Finding your personal style starts with understanding what personal style actually is.
Personal style is not just the clothes you wear. It is your lifestyle, the way you speak, your hairstyle, the people around you, and how everything works together. The key word here is “personal,” meaning you don’t need to copy Pinterest outfits or buy every trend that influencers and brands tell us to buy. You can use them for inspiration, but the goal is not to look like everyone else.
What Personal Style Really Means
To find your personal style, you need to start with yourself. You really need to understand yourself, how you want to feel in the clothes you wear, and the impression you want to make.
Start With Yourself
Before you buy new clothes or follow another trend, ask yourself: What do I actually like? What clothes make me feel comfortable and confident? What impression do I want to make?
Your personal style should support your lifestyle and personality, not make you feel like you are pretending to be someone else.
Build Your Wardrobe Base
Start with the basics. 80% of your wardrobe should be your base: high-quality fabrics, natural colors, and pieces that mix well together.
For some people, a basic wardrobe is dresses, skirts, and blouses. For others, like myself, a basic wardrobe is pants, blazers, and cotton shirts. You have to build your wardrobe according to your lifestyle and personality.
Add Personality With Statement Pieces
When you have a solid base, the remaining 20% of your wardrobe can be statement pieces or trends. This is what helps you create more interesting outfits and make your wardrobe feel more personal.
Don’t Dress Like Someone Else
This is very important: don’t buy every trend. To build your personal style, start with pieces you like, pieces you feel comfortable and confident in, and clothes that emphasize who you really are, not who you are pretending to be.
You can easily see when people are wearing the wrong clothes. They feel uncomfortable and not confident, and it shows.
Your personal style should feel like you, not like a costume.
